Nice article! It might be interesting to factor out the data when a rider crashes or DNF’s in a race…to really see how FP4 (for example) correlates to race finish “when the rider is not affected by unforeseen events”. This would be less useful in determining the championship winner or placement, as obviously these events impact the championship significantly. But it might give more confidence in how FP4 (for example) at each race correlates to finish for each race, exempting circumstances around crashes, DNFs, collisions with other riders / run-offs, etc. Super interesting…thanks for the thought put into this!

Fascinating stuff.

How useful would greater granularity than MotoGP scoring be, at least for analysis’ sake? i.e. first earns points equal to the number of entries, then each successive position gets just one point less, all the way down the field — including all finishers lower than 15th?
